In April 2022, Dollar General reported it had “approximately 55” pOpshelf stores and 25 “store- within-a-store locations that combine pOpshelf and Dollar General Market offerings.”

The Aiken Standard reported in 2022 that most items at pOpshelf stores were being sold for $5 or less. They included home goods, beauty products, seasonal decorations and party supplies.

The target customers back then were women who lived in suburban areas and had an annual household income that ranged from $50,000 to $125,000, CNBC reported.

Dollar General was projecting in 2022 that it would be operating “up to a total of approximately 1,000” pOpshelf stores by the end of fiscal year 2025, according to a news release.

The foundation of Dollar General’s retail empire is a chain of deep-discount stores that cater to low-income shoppers living in rural towns.

Last year, Dollar General announced that it was slowing down the expansion of its pOpshelf format, which focuses on selling discretionary items.

“The macroeconomic environment is more challenging than the company had previously anticipated, which the company believes is having a significant impact on customers,” Dollar General said in an earnings release.
