Aiken fire crews responded Tuesday afternoon to an attic fire at the Department of Social Services. 

Aiken Department of Public Safety dispatch said the call about a fire in the attic at the Department of Social Services came in around 12:14 p.m.; the building is located at 1410 Park Ave. in Aiken.

Coroner IDs victim from North Augusta fire

Lt. Jennifer Hayes with Aiken Department of Public Safety said she was unaware of any injuries and a cause of the fire has not been determined.

Hayes said the fire was under control as of 1:50 p.m.

The fire may have been started due to welding activity by a contractor repairing an exterior door, DSS said in a statement.

 No employees or members of the public were injured during the event, and DSS thanked first responders who answered the call for help quickly.

The location on Park Avenue will be closed until further notice and people needing assistance should visit the DSS office in North Augusta located on East Martintown Road, Suite 183.
