The Aiken County Sheriff's Office said one person was killed in a Wednesday evening shooting in the 900 block of Aiken Road, which is outside the city limits of North Augusta. 

A North Augusta man is dead after a shooting late Wednesday afternoon.

Capt. Eric Abdullah with the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting took place a little after 5:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Old Aiken Road.

Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables said the male victim was pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.

Ables said the victim will be autopsied Friday in Newberry and the name will be released once next-of-kin has been notified.

North Augusta Department of Public Safety was called to the scene for assistance.

The coroner’s and sheriff’s offices are continuing to investigate the shooting.

Denny Hamlin held off a hard-charging Kyle Larson over the final, thrilling laps and wiggled through lapped traffic to win the NASCAR Cup race by about a quarter of a second Sunday at Dover Motor Speedway.
